As an aside, I watched "Shake Hands With The Devil" today, and it reaffirmed my commitment to Amensty International - a humanitarian group operating globally, of which I've been a contributing member for six years and local council member for three.

Amnesty's mission statement is "to undertake research and action focused on preventing and ending abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination, within the context of its work to promote all human rights". How can you argue with that? Soul-less twats.

Here are some current high-priority campaigns on the Canadian front:

Stop Violence Against Women - an ongoing campaign in all chapters that ties in nicely to International Women's Week
Stolen Sisters - An ongoing Canadian extension of SVAW focusing on murder and rape of Canadian aboriginal women, seeking resolution for many unsolved and ambiguous cases
Share Power - an ongoing campaign seeking, among other things, a more rights-based and environmentally-sound refinement to NAFTA
Afghan Detainee Transfers - a newer, high-priority campaign seeking strict regulations on the transfer of Afghan detainees from NATO into the hands of Afghani military in light of torture allegations
Mexican Indigenous Human Rights - a very new campaign launched after the murder of the husband of one of my mentors in Mexico this February, seeking investigation into the deaths of indigenous Mexicans killed while involved actively in lobbying for human rights for the indigenous
Colombia - a campaign to nip an impending genocide on the ass

As an average citizen or member, you can help by participating in letter writing campaigns - often available via email, for you computer junkies - or by donating money on a one-time or monthly basis.

OR! If you want to be SUPER KEWL like me, you can FUNDRAISE for the organization - panhandle, do a charity drive, whatever you can, organize a team to help you out, canvas the area, be completely and totally MADE OF WIN! For the sake of humanity!
